Korean Box Office: Rated R-18 “The Childe” Debuts at No. 3

The Childe (2023), an R-18 rated Korean film starring Kim Seonho, Kang Tae-joo, Kim Kang-woo, and Go Ara premiered at third place of the daily box office in South Korea, on Wednesday, June 21st.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the noir action film sold 64,918 tickets and grossed $485,057 from 966 screens on the first day of release. Including the pre-opening screening, the movie has recorded 93,534 in total admissions and a gross of $631,021 to date.

Rated PG-13 Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023), which released on the same day, took second place with 70,801 admissions and a gross of $577,206. The Roundup: No Way Out (2023), which has crossed 9 million admissions since its release on May 31st, topped the daily box office with 82,541 audiences and a gross of $620,972.

The Childe (2023) highlights the mad pursuit of an aspiring Korean-Filipino (Kopino) boxer named Marco Han who goes to various illegal arenas in the Philippines by a strange nobleman and other mysterious forces whose unknown mission is but to chase him and make his life a mess. Struggling to provide for his ill mother, the Kopino comes to South Korea to find his father but strangely finds himself in a perilous situation with unidentified chasers. It is written and helmed by Park Hoon-jung, the Korean director best known for his original and distinct style of R-rated noir action films.

The Childe (2023) premiered on June 21 in South Korea, Taiwan, and Indonesia. It is also showing in Vietnam on June 23; in Singapore and Malaysia on June 29; in USA and Canada on June 30; in the Philippines on July 5; in Hongkong on July 13; and in Thailand on July 27.
