Missing Captain Ri? Here Are 3 Upcoming Action Films Starring Hyun Bin

Hyun Bin, also known as Kim Tae-pyung, is one of the most popular and influential celebrities from South Korea. He is also well-recognized internationally as a top Hallyu star.

His successful projects include My Lovely Sam Soon (2005), Secret Garden (2010), Confidential Assignment 1 (2017), The Negotiation (2018), and Memories of the Alhambra (2018), to name a few.

The popular hit “Crash Landing On You” in 2020 was his last appearance on a television series project where he was famously called as Captain Ri. He also worked together with his real-life girlfriend celebrity, Son Yejin, in this famous romantic-comedy drama.

Since then, Hyun Bin was seen only in commercial projects but started filming for his new movies. Here are the three upcoming action films to look forward to starring our favorite Captain Ri:


“Confidential Assignment 2” is an action film about a detective from North Korea, Im Cheol-ryung, played by Hyun Bin, who is re-sent to South Korea for a secret investigation. He will work again with South Korean detective, Kang Jin-tae, played by Yoo Hae-jin. Together, they will chase a criminal syndicate.

It is reported to be the sequel to the box office hit Confidential Assignment 1 directed by Kim Sunghoon which was released in 2017. In the 2022 film, an American agent from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will join the investigation. It will be played by Daniel Henney.

The film is directed by Lee Seok-hoon, which also stars Im Yoonah and Jin Seonkyu.

In February of this year, the script reading took place. Around the same month, the entire cast began filming. In June, the filming ended. No announcement was made yet for the movie premiere.

However, the 2017 Confidential Assignment took home the following awards:

  • “AFA Next Generation Award” for Im Yoonah at the 12th Asian Film Awards


“Bargaining” also known as “The Point Men” is an action-crime-thriller film based on the true events about the 2007 hostage of South Korean missionaries by the Taliban group in Afghanistan. The story will highlight the disparity between Christianity and Islamic faith.

Hyun Bin will play the role of a National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent while Hwang Jungmin will portray the character of a skilled diplomat sent by the Korean government. Together they will handle the situation and conduct a rescue operation amid risks and struggles in a foreign land.

This huge production is led by a female director, Yim Soon-rye, which encountered challenges in filming due to COVID-19 travel restrictions and quarantines. However, the cast shooting in Jordan began in July 2020 and ended in September of the same year.

No announcement was made yet for the movie premiere. However, Hyun Bin shared through the August 2021 online fan meet with Smart that the films “Bargaining” and “Confidential Assignment 2” are almost ready to be released.


“Harbin” is a spy action film about the independent Korean group of fighters who will risk their lives against the Japanese colonial rule to take back their homeland.

Set in the early 1900s in Harbin China, Hyun Bin”s role is reported to portray both intense action and emotions amid fight for freedom. He has accepted the project offer for its quality, interesting storyline, and trust for the director, Woo Minho.

Filming will begin in 2022.
