Kim Sung-cheol, Kim Seonho, Kim Yoo-jung, And More Nominated For Theater Performances In Golden Ticket Awards 2023

Forty-eight artists in theater and musical stage performances, including well-known actors have been nominated for the 17th Golden Ticket Awards hosted by Interpark, South Korea’s largest online ticket website that holds awards every year for best performances in theater since 2005.

Interpark is known to use insights in best ticket power including tally of works, number of sales of the character’s appearance, and audience impact that has provided viewers various emotions of laughter, tears, and joy. The final result is then calculated by adding 60% of ticket power and 40% of audience assessment through online voting.

For this year, the official candidates for the Person Category in eight sections were selected from paid performances sold by Interpark within the period of March 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. Among the twelve artists nominated for the male theater actor category, Kim Sung-cheol and Kim Seonho take first and second spots respectively, as of April 6th.

Kim Sung-cheol is best known for his TV performances in Prison Playbook (2017), Arthdal Chronicles (2019), Vincenzo (2021), and Our Beloved Summer (2021-22), and has been active in musicals and stage plays since 2014. In the musical play, Death Note (2022-23), he played L Lawliet, a highly-esteemed detective and criminal profiler whose true identity is shrouded in mystery. In the stage play, Shakespeare In Love (2023), he transformed into William Shakespeare who is regarded as a great poet, writer, and actor.

Kim Seonho has been an active performer for theatrical productions since 2009, even before he rose to Hallyu stardom in Start-Up (2020) and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021). In the stage play, Touching The Void (2022), he played the tormenting yet life-changing story of Joe Simpson, a mountaineer who survived a near-death experience while hiking the 20,853-foot Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. It was reported that all seats on his performance dates were immediately sold out after the online selling was opened and that the audience gave him the loudest cheers and a standing ovation that lasted 10 minutes.

In the female theater actor category, twelve artists were nominated including Kim Yoo-jung, Kim Shin-rok, and Chae Soo-bin. So far, Kim Yoo-jung who played Viola de Lesseps in the stage play, Shakespeare In Love (2023) tops the female poll with 22% of votes. This is her second appearance in a theater production since her first stage performance in 2017. She is best known for her TV works in Love In The Moonlight (2016), Backstreet Rookie (2020), and Lovers Of The Red Sky (2021).

Kim Shin-rok, a theater actor since 2004, takes second place in the poll with 18.6% of votes as of writing. She performed a role in the stage play, Heal The Living (2022), a heart-rending piece that deals with life and death, following the story of a heart transplant from a person to another. She is best known for her TV and web performances in Hellbound (2021) and Reborn Rich (2022).

In the musical category, Jeon Mido who played Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd (2022-23), ranks first place in the female poll with 24.1% of votes as of April 6th. She has been active in theater and musical plays since 2006 and is known for her TV roles in Hospital Playlist (2020-21) and Thirty Nine (2022).

The online poll for the 17th Golden Ticket Awards ends on April 12th and the final results will be announced on April 24th.
