Director Yoo Je-won has earned the national win as Best Director in Fiction for Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021) and will represent South Korea at the Grand Awards and Gala Finale in Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022.

Twelve nominees from 12 countries have been announced to compete in the final round for Best Direction in Fiction. South Korea’s Yoo Je-won in tvN’s Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021) has been selected as official candidate alongside New Zealand’s Aidee Walker for Kid Sister, Bangladesh’s Mohammad Touqir Islam for Shaaticup, Hongkong’s Ip Chun-Fai for Barrack O’karma 1968, India’s Basil Joseph for Minnal Murali, Indonesia’s Guntur Soeharjanto for The Earth Of Three Colors, Japan’s Gekidan Hitori for Asakusa Kid, Malaysia’s Yusry Abdul Halim for Ganjil, Philippines’ Erik Matti for On The Job, Singapore’s Lee Thean-Jeen for This Land Is Mine, Taiwan’s Lien Yi-Chi for Light The Night, and Thailand’s Eakkapop Paiaree for Remember 15.

Yoo Je-won helmed the healing series, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021) based on the Korean film, Mr. Handy, Mr. Hong (2014) by Kang Seok-beom and Shin Jung-goo. Set in the seaside village of fictional Gongjin in Pohang, South Korea, the TV version explores relatable social issues in a fun and warm style, introducing a town hero with odd jobs who helps everyone in need but hides a dark past, and a perfectionist dentist whose life turns around when she loses her job in Seoul and moves to the countryside, meeting ordinary yet extraordinary people.

The lifelike drama touched the hearts of many viewers, old and young alike, for its heartwarming experience that celebrates the beauty of life, love, community, and healing, with its actors who managed to portray their characters believable and memorable upon the guidance and direction of PD Yoo.

TV Director Yoo Je-won is also known for his works in Oh, My Ghost (2015), Tomorrow, With You (2017), and Hi, Bye Mama! (2020), just to name a few.

The final winners of this year’s Asian Academy Creative Awards will be officially announced during the Grand Awards and Gala Finale in Singapore on December 7-8, 2022.
